Sapphire FUE vs DHI: Which One is Right for You?

Understanding Hair Transplant Technologies

If you are planning to get a hair transplant, you have likely come across the terms Sapphire FUE and DHI (Direct Hair Implantation). Both are state-of-the-art procedures, but they have distinct differences in how the channels are opened and follicles are implanted.

1. Sapphire FUE Technique

In Sapphire FUE, channels are opened using blades made from precious sapphire gemstone. Because sapphire blades are extremely sharp, smooth, and durable, they minimize tissue damage, reduce crusting, and enable closer channel positioning for higher density. It is highly recommended for patients requiring extensive coverage.

2. DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) Technique

With DHI, the extraction is similar, but implantation is done using a specialized device called the Choi Implanter Pen. Channel opening and follicle insertion occur simultaneously. This allows for precise control of depth, angle, and direction. It is excellent for natural-looking hairline restorations, beard transplants, and unshaven procedures.

Comparison Summary

  • Coverage: Sapphire FUE is better for larger bald areas; DHI is ideal for precision densification.
  • Shaving: Sapphire FUE requires a full head shave; DHI often allows unshaven procedures.
  • Recovery time: Both offer extremely fast recovery, but DHI generally has slightly less post-op scabbing.
